FIES: understand how student financing works

What is FIES?

The Student Financing Fund, known as FIES, is a program created by the Brazilian government to facilitate access to higher education. It offers financing for students who are unable to afford the full cost of tuition. With this support, it is possible to finance part of the educational expenses while the student is still in training.

FIES is mainly aimed at students enrolled in non-free courses at higher education institutions that participate in the program. This means that if you enroll in a college that charges tuition, you can apply for the program to help finance those costs.

How does financing work?

In FIES, the student contracts a financing that can cover part or even 100% of educational expenses, according to the program rules and the terms of the contract. During the course, the student may have amounts to pay related to the portion of expenses that is not financed, in addition to other charges stipulated in the contract.

After completing the course, the student begins to repay the financing according to the conditions set forth in the contract. For students who qualify under the FIES program with a per capita family income of up to three minimum wages, the financing has a zero real interest rate, according to the program's rules.

Recent Changes in FIES

Recently, some modifications have been implemented in the program. Among them are changes related to the availability of slots and the participation rules for educational institutions, which may expand the options available to students during the selection processes.

Additionally, FIES has a significant budgetary impact on the government, and changes in the rules and availability of resources can influence future financing cycles. Therefore, it is important to monitor the prevailing conditions at the time of registration.

Who can register?

To apply for FIES, the student must meet some basic requirements:

  • Have participated in Enem, since 2010, achieving a minimum average of 450 points and a score above zero in the essay.
  • Have family income within the limits set by the program, according to the financing modality.
  • Be enrolled in a course at a higher education institution participating in FIES.

These criteria help ensure that funding is directed to students who would otherwise face greater challenges in accessing higher education.

Importance of FIES for the student

FIES is an important tool in Brazilian education, as it increases access to higher education for students who may have difficulties affording the costs of a private college.

Having a college degree can broaden professional opportunities and contribute to the student’s financial education in the long run. In this context, FIES can facilitate access to higher education, but it also represents a financial commitment that should be considered before enrollment.

Looking to the Future

It is important for prospective students to consider not only the benefits of FIES, but also the financing conditions and the possible changes in the program rules.

Before making the decision to enroll, it is essential to assess the cost-benefit of the financing and understand how the chosen modality, the financed amounts, and the payment conditions can influence your financial life after completing the course.

By educating themselves on these issues, the student can make a more informed decision about their education and financial future. FIES can be an alternative to facilitate access to higher education, but it is important to understand the conditions of the financing before taking on this debt.
